LIFE LIST: Spend Groundhog Day in Punxatawney

What: Celebrate Groundhog Day in Punxutawney Pennsylvania with my mom.

When: February 2, 2010

Where: Punxutawney Pennsylvania

Why I wanted to do this: Well, I have always loved the movie Groundhog Day and then one year while I was watching the news on February 2nd I saw the large crowds of people waiting in the cold to celebrate this furry little groundhog and I thought 'What a nutty thing to do....I DEFINITELY WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS GOOFY TRADITION!' In January of 2010 I was able to convince my mom to go with me.

Cost: I cannot imagine it was more than $400 at the most.

How I paid for it: I'm not going to lie-my mom paid for everything....it was awesome.

These groundhogs were all over this tiny humble town in the mountains

What I would do differently? We also did not actually make it to the ceremony, because my research was misleading and we would have had to walk 1 mile uphill which isn't so bad but it was 4h in the morning, we would have had to stand outside at the ceremony location for 4 hours and that day it was only 2 degrees outside. I know I could have persuaded my mom to take the trek but I couldn't do that to her, maybe if we had been prepared with long johns and hand warmers but it was for the best that I was with my mother and did not get too wild or stress my body out- as it turned out I was pregnant but didn't find out until a few weeks later. Also, next time I go, I want to stay at one of the two hotels right in the town. Our Holiday Inn was about 30 minutes away from Punxutawney.

Something i would recommend? ABSOLUTELY!

Love that my mom bought and wore this groundhog hat all over town!

Will I do it again? I hope to! It was such a fun and wacky experience that I think everyone should go at least once.

Life changing? I am so glad I went with my mom, this is the only trip just she and I have taken together and it was so quirky, last minute and FUN! And this was the perfect trip for us to do together since she is also quirky, fun and random. It was a very special trip.

Every window was displayed with groundhogs

The full view of Gobblers Knob-this was totally packed with thousands of people

  5. HAHA DANNIE! I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT IT IS! Actually while I was writing it, I thought 'should I describe what it is, I'm SURE no other country celebrates it-Dannie won't know what I"m talking about!' Yea, it seems fictional, it was surreal to be there. It really was terrific and so cool to watch it on TV now each year, and the holiday itself is special and meaningful to me now!

  6. How fun! I have lots of trips I want to take with my mother (I don't have siblings). I think she would love this. Of course she would love anything that is cold and snowy LOL! In south Texas we are wearing shorts and T-shirts :) I loved all the pictures!
